From the office of 'chaplain' (AF. chapelein, Church Latin capellanus). Henry the chaplain and Humfrey the chaplain are charter witnesses in reign of Malcolm IV (Bain, II, p. 421,423). John called Chapelayn, burgess of Aberdeen in 1271 (Fraser, p. 9). Henry le Chapeleyn of Roxburghshire rendered homage, 1296. His seal reads S' Henrici Capellani (Bain, II, p. 199 532). Roger capellanus was custumar of Edinburgh in 1327 (ER., I, p. 82), and Alecia dicta Chapelane filia quondam Ade Chapelane, burgess of Aberdeen, is recorded in 1310 (REA., I, p. 40). Richard Schapillayn or Schapellaynheld a burgage in Dundee in 1344 (HP., II, p. 134). John Chapellane was made guild brother in right of his wife in Edinburgh in 1462 (EBR., 19), and Peter Chaplan or Chaplane was parson of Dennennow (Dunins) in 1526 (SCM., IV, p. 23, 25).
