A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

From Chartres in the department of Eure-et-Loire, France, "The Sirname of Carnatto, which we English Charters, is very ancient with us" (Crawfurd, Lives p. 19). In the reign of William the Lion, Walter de Carnoto gifted the church of Trauerflet (Trailflat) and the church of Dungrey or Drumereyoch to the Abbey of Kelso (Kelso, 13,334). In 1266 we have a charter confirming this gift which supplies us with the names of four generations: Robert called of Carnoto, knight, son and heir of Thomas de Carnoto, son and heir of Thomas de Carnoto, son and heir of Walcher de Carnoto (ibid., 345). Adam de Carnoto witnessed quitclaim by Richard de Bancori to Robert de Brus of the whole land of Loyerwode (Locharwood), a. 1249 (Bain, I, 1684). Thomas de Carnoto who witnessed a charter by Gamelin, bishop of St. Andrews to the Abbey of Lindores, 1259 (LAC., p. 132), may be Thomas de Carnoto, archdeacon of Lothian, who had a dispensation to hold the church of Fetheresath (Fetteresso) in the diocese of St. Andrews, 1262 (Pop. Lett., I, p. 382) Ada de Cartres witnessed the gift of William's vill in Garviach to the Abbey of Lindores c. 1261 (LAC., p. 146). Magister Thomas de Carnoto is mentioned as chancellor in 1290 (ER., I, p. 19). A Charteris had the wardship of Amysfeild granted him by the Guardians of the Kingdom after the death of Alexander III (ER., I). Robert de Chartres and William de Chartres of Roxburghshire rendered homage, 1296. The seal of Robert bears an eight-rayed figure and S' Roberti d' Chartris (Bain, II, p. 199,202, 552). Thomas de Carnoto witnessed a Dumfries charter of 1341 (RHM., II, 48), and Sir Patrick and Thomas de Chartres held land in the vill of Malkarestone before 1361 (Bain, IV, 60). Another Thomas de Carnotho was charter witness in 1406—7 (REB., I, 26; II, 16). James Charterhous, a steward of Kelso Abbey at Trailflat, 1556 (Kelso, p. 484), and Agnes Charterhouse was in Dundee, 1613 (Brechin). Archibald Charterhous rendered to Exchequer the accounts of the bailie of Kintore, 1593 (ER., XXII, p. 340). John Charters was herd at Yetholm, 1790 (Heirs, 452). Chairtris and Chairteris 1706, Charteouris 1610, Charteris 1586, Chartirris 1525, Chartrews 1660, Chartris 1455, Chartrous 1546.
