From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
From the lands of Chatto on the Kale Water in the parish of Hounam, Roxburghshire. William de Chetue witnessed a charter by William de Veteri Ponte, c. 1198—1214 (Kelso, 139). Adam de Chatthou witnessed various charters in the reign of William the Lion (Melros, 109,142, etc.), and John, son of Adam de Chatthou appears in a charter in the same reign (ibid., 149). Two charters were attested by Alexander de Chatthou, c. 1225, and in the following year he renounced a claim which he had previously made (Melros, 245,246, 247). He may have been the Alexander de Chattun who was constable of Roxburgh in 1255 (Kelso, p. 130). Adam de Chathou of the county of Roxburgh rendered homage in 1296. His seal bears a fleur-de-Iys, S' Ade de Cliattov (Bain, II, p. 199,532). Robert de Chattone also of the county of Roxburgh and William de Chattone, vicar of the church of Ederham of the county of Berewyke rendered homage in the same year (ibid., p. 207,208). Walron de Chattoun was rector of the church of Jetham (Yetholm) in 1300 (Kelso, p. 137), in 1322 Robert I confirmed to John de Chatton certain lands in Roxburghshire (Melros, p. 466), Eustace of Chattow witnessed a grant of the Forest of Eteryk to John Kerre in 1358 (Roxburghe, p. 9), and three years later he appears as juror at Roxburgh (Bain, IV, 62). Thomas de Schatto confirms his cousin's sale of a tenement in Lessydwyn to the monks of Melrose in 1415 (Melros, 535—537). Richard Chatto signed an ussedation by the convent of Melrose in 1534 (Melrose, p. 629), and between 1537 and 1559 several charters of the convent were witnessed by Dein Jhon Chatto (Dryburgh, p. 281,284, etc.). Sir Adam Chatto was subprior of Kelso in 1531 (Protocols, I), Richard Chatto was subprior of Melrose in 1540 (RRM., III, p. 225), John Chatu is recorded in Dunfermline in 1572 (Dunfermline), and Catherine Chatu in Over Ingievar in 1695 (Stirling).
