(English) Cheese Maker or Dealer [Middle English ches(e)man; Old English ciese, (Latin case-us, cheese] John le Cheseman.—Hundred Rolls
A maker of, or dealer in cheese. Le Cheseman, Le Chesemaker. H.R. Analogous to the modem 'butter-man.'
A dealer in cheese.
Lower does not give this name, but "Cheesman, a maker of or dealer in cheese, Le Cheseman, Le Chesemaker, H.R., analogous to the modern butter-man." He gives also Cheesewright and Cheesemonger. The latter is no doubt a modem name, but Cheesewright may be compounded of chaise, a chair. I find also in Ferguson, Chisman and Chismon, and am disposed to derive Cheeseman from Old German geis-mund, a strong man. See Cashman.
The Kentish Cheesmans date back to the 16th century. In the reign of Henry VIII., John Cheseman held for a time the manor and parsonage of Lewisham (H.), and Chiesman is still a Lewisham name. In Elizabeth's time he represented New Romney in Parliament and filled the office of mayor (H.).
