Humphrey Chetham (1580-1653), founder of the Manchester Hospital and Library that bear his name, and James Chetham (1640-92), writer on angling, were both born within two miles of Chetham, one at Crumpsall Hall, the other at Smedley.

This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Cheetham' or 'Chetham,' a township and suburb of Manchester. The two Chethams recorded in the Dictionary of National Biography x. 206 7, viz. Humphrey Chetham (1580-1653), founder of the Manchester Hospital and Library that bear his name, and James Chetham (1640-92), writer on angling, were both born within two miles of Chetham, one at Crumpsall Hall, the other at Smedley.
