Cheevers Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
Cheever’s (Son): v. Cheever. This name was Latinized de Querceto.
Cp. Chaney.
In south-east Leinster since the Anglo-Norman invasion. MIF 88
(English) Dweller at the sign of the goat; one who cared for goats.
From La Chievre or Capra, in Normandy. William Capra held forty-seven lordships in barony, 1086, in Devonshire (Domesd.). His name occurs in Normandy, 1070 (Gall. Christ. xi., Instr. 64). William Capre and Gosfred C. witnessed a charter of Montacute, Somerset, c. 1100 (Mon. ii. 910). William C. was one of the chief Barons of Rufus, and a justiciary (Mon. i. 997). The seat of the barony was at Bradninch, Devon; it was lost temp. Henry I., but the family remained. In Ireland they became Viscounts Mount-Leinster.
User-submitted Reference
Cheevers left Normandy with William "the Conquer" and landed in Britain and from there (roughly 350-400 years later) left for what is now County Wexford in Ireland. Cromwell pushed them out of Wexford and they now call Galway home.
Cheevers borrows from the French, chèvre, for 'goat' and the family crest includes three goats on a red shield among other heraldic flourishes.
The name stems from the "sure-footedness" and the "fleet-footed" goat. The coat of arms most likely awarded to a swift messenger or perhaps a stalwart knight and the derivative "Cheevers" was born along with another four of five variants of the spelling. The Cheevers were very successful and highly regarded whilst they were in jolly ol' England and were awarded land in Wexford (before confiscation by Cromwell) and there exists a remnant of castle which is still used today as a private residence.
