Cheshire in the reign of Henry VI. in Derbyshire it is __ numerous in the Chesterfield district, and was established in E__ in the reign of Charles II. (W.). We find the name in Gloucestershire in the 17th century (Atkyn's "Gloucestershire"); and have not found it in Wiltshire before the 16th century. Han__ was the name of the mayors of Salisbury in 1606, 1639, and __ (Easton's "Mayors of Salisbury"). The name was in Westb__ Wilts, in the 17th century, and in Warminster in the same co__ during last century (Hoare's "Wiltshire"). Hancock was a Glastonbury name in the 17th century, but it has probably characterised the county of Somerset for several centuries; it is represented in Taunton a hundred years ago, and is still founded that neighbourhood. North Devon has long been a home of the name; a gentle family of Handcock resided at Combmartin in the 16th and 17th centuries (Westcote's "Devonshire"); Edvard Hancocke represented Barnstaple in parliament in 1602 (Grib__ "Barnstaple"). In 1573 John Hancocke was mayor of P__ Dorset (Sydenham's "Poole").
