CHIESLEY, Chiesly: Thomas Cheslye is recorded in Caldyrstarris, 1532 (Rental), and David Cheislie was witness in Linlithgow, 1534 (Johnsoun). Magister John Cheislie was minister of the word of God at Quothquon or Quodquan, Lanarkshire, 1635 and 1653 (Inquis., 2171; Lanark CR.). Sir John Cheislie of Kerswall, knight, in record, 1677 (Retours, Lanark, 341), and John Cheislie of Carswell was warded in the Canongate Tolbooth, Edinburgh, 1683 (BOEC., VIII, p. 156). Chiesly of Dairy assassinated Sir George Lockhart in 1689, and John Chiesley, a Scottish merchant in London, suggested the establishment of an East India Company in Scotland, 1695. George Cheislie, elder in Elrig, 1652, and other two of the name are recorded in Stirling Commissariot Record. John Chiesley. writer in Edinburgh, 1730 (Guildry, p. 137).
