Chippendale Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Chippingdale,' or 'Chippendale,' the dale in which stands the village of Chipping, on the north-eastern confines of Lancashire. An old established family of Chippindall still has representatives in the town of Lancaster. Although the furniture-maker, Thomas Chippendale, was a native of Worcestershire, his progenitors must have 'worked down' from Lancaster. There can be no doubt about his descent. Lying on the confines of Yorkshire we find the earliest instance in that county:

Ricardus Chipyndale, 1379: Poll Tax of Yorkshire.

1624. William Chippendall, of Gressingham: Lancashire Wills proved at Richmond.

1649. Edward Chippendale, of Claughton: ibid.

1679. Robert Chippingdale, of Claughton: ibid.

All these dwelt in the neighbourhood of Lancaster.
