From the place of this name in Berwickshire. William de Chemysyd is mentioned as holding land c. 1250—1266 (Soltre, p. 31), and in the same century we have a charter by Mariote de Chirneside "quondam uxor Ricaidi de Reston" of a carucate of land at Remingston to the prior of St. Ebbe, Coldingham (Seals. Supp., 206). Hugh de Chirnesyde who witnessed an agreement between the bishop of St. Andrews and the abbot of Kelso in 1316 (Kelso, 310), may be Hugo de Schirnessyd who witnessed an instrument of relaxation of c. 1328 (ibid., p. 370). Laurence de Chernside held land in Edinburgh in 1391 (RMS., I, 855), and John Chirnsyde had a charter of die lands of Fowllerland in the toun of Quhitsome from Robert III (RMS., I, App. II, 1805). John Chyrnesey, chaplain, 'Scocneman,' altos Chyrnese alias Chirnesyde had a pardon in 1407 (Bain, IV, p. 151). David of Chernside is in record in 1448 and again in 1451 (Bain, IV, 1207, 1240), and a Chimsyde of Whitsumlawes appears in a retour of the lands of Vedderburn in 1469 (Sc. Ant., VII, p. 25). John Chernside and David Chernside witnessed an instrument of sasine in 1474 (Home, p. 23), and David Chernside was summoned in 1479 to answer to Parliament for treason and other crimes (APS., II, p. 129). Patrick Chernside was admitted burgess of Aberdeen in 1493 (NSCM., I, p. 37; CRA., p. 50), and Robert Chyrnsid of Possil was "commisser of Glesguowe" in 1595 (Cawdor, p. 211). William Chirnsyde was the first Reformed minister of the parish of Luss. David Chirnesyde of Posso was on an assize in 1613 (Trials, III, p. 250), and another David Chyrnsyde was retoured heir in lands in the barony of Haills in 1662 (Retours, Berwick, 288). The name of Bothwell's servant, Archibald Chirnside, appears in record as Chirnseede, Chirneseede, Chirmseede, and Chernsyde (CSPS., X). Chernsid 1478 and 1495, Chernsvd 1476, Chirniesyd 1605, Chyrnsyd 1552, Chyrnsyde and Chyrnesyde 1598.
