The origin of the Chisis can be traced back to Tanzania, where they came from along with the Chungas and Chipetas. They arrived in Malawi as a split tribe of the Sukuma people of Tanzania. It is not clear whether the name Chisi has a different meaning among the Sukumas, the tribe where they originally came from.
