Chowne Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. —the son of Chun.' Probably the same as Chuon (v. Chuonmund, Yonge).
Chun Mervyn, Cambridgeshire, 1273. Hundred Rolls.
Chun Pimme, Cambridgeshire, ibid.
Chun Pistor, Cambridgeshire, ibid.
William Chaun, Lincolnshire, ibid.
Hugh Chone, Oxfordshire, ibid.
Robertus Chaune, 1379: Poll Tax of Yorkshire.
Since writing the above I have come across the following strongly corroborative evidence:
1596. Francis Chowne, or Chune, Christ Church: Register of the University of Oxford.
It may be looked upon as certain that Chown and Chowne represent the old personal name Chun.
1668-9. Thomas Chowne and Elizabeth Foice: Marriage Alleg. (Canterbury).
Perh. through French from the O.H.Ger. chuoni (found in pers. names) —O.E. coen, céne, ‘bold,' ‘keen’; but more likely a mutated form (chun) of the Welsh cun, 'a leader', 'chief'.
Chun Mervyn.—Hundred Rolls
Castle Chiowne, Chioune, Chun, or Choon, in Cornwall, is a very ancient ruin. See Archaeologia, XXII. 300. Davies Gilbert says that this appellation "is well known to mean a house in a croft." Hist. Cornw. iii. 244. Chun, a Welsh family name, is probably identical in signification. Chone. H.R. The Chownes of Kent and Sussex were said to be descended from a follower of the Conqueror, who came from La Vendee. B.L.G.
This family is said to be from. Castle Chiowne, Chioune, Chun, or Choon, which some interpret a "house in a croft." I take it to be the same name as Chywoon in Morrah, or Perran Arwarthal; from chy-woon, the house on the down or common. There was a Thomas Chounens or Chowne; and Chowen, Chawn, Chunn would seem to be the same name.
