Chrimes Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Grim,' v. Grimes, of which I doubt not it is a corruption. G and C constantly change places in English nomenclature; compare Grain and Crane, Gamel and Cammel, Gandelyn and Candlin, &c. Chrimes is found chiefly in the district where Grim was familiar. That Grim was a Cheshire personal name we know from the fact that Grimsditch is a place in that county, whence has sprung the surname. Thomas Crimes, of Nether Whitley, 1616: Wills at Chester.

William Crimes, of Sandiway, 1618: ibid.

Edward Crimes, of Kingsley, Cheshire, 1648: ibid.

Towards the close of the 17th century the spelling became Chrimes:

Robert Chrimes, of Gorstick: Wills at Chester.
