'the son of Christopher,' from the diminutive Christie, which see. Christy and Chrystinus were used as equivalents of Christopher as a forename (Milne). Henry Cristeson held a tenement in Stirling in 1412 (Cambus., 210), Alexander Cristini (Latin gen.), burgess of Brechin in 1436 is probably the Alexander Cristisone or Cristysoun who appears as a witness in the same town in 1446 and 1447 (REB., I, 81,105, 109; 11, 60). In the Scots text he is Alexander Cristysoun and in the notary's Latin note he is Alexandra Cristini John Crysteson was burgess of Edinburgh in 1450 (EBR., 9), and the surname was common there in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Robert Cristison witnessed a sasine in 1458 (Neubotle, p. 246,248), Alan Cristison was admitted burgess of Aberdeen in 1479 (NSCM., I, p. 28), Alexander Cristesone was member of assize at Cupar in 1521 (SCBF., p. 223), David Cristeson was presented to the vicarage of the parish church of Abirkerdor in 1525 (RAA., II, 611); Robert Crystison was a friar of Culross in 1569 (Laing, 844), Donald Cristyson was burgess of Kyrkwaw in 1455 (REO., p. 191), William Cristesoune was fugitive from the law in 1531 (Trials, I, p. 155), and Andrew Chrystesone was retoured heir of John Chrystesone his father in lands of Wester Coudlands in the barony of Coudland in 1620 (Retours, Fife, 303)."The name was common in the shires of Aberdeen, Kincardine, and Forfar, and was borne by many churchmen" (Stodart).
