A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

Bardsley says this surname is of local origin, but in Scotland it is certainly a diminutive or pet form of Christopher, which see, as shown, for instance, by the name of Christall Murray who appears as depute of the sheriff of Stirling in 1561 (SBR., p. 79). The first form was an old surname in Foveran and it was not uncommon in Prestwick, Ayrshire, in the fifteenth century. Willi Cristole was a burgess of Prestwick in 1470 (Prestwick, p. 1), and in 1474 Charles Cristoll was presented in court and the bailies were asked "to put till enquest to inquire and se gef that he was narrest and apperand air to vmquhill Cristoll Jonsoun" (ibid., p. 25). John Cristall witnessed a charter of land in Rait in 1491 (Scon, p. 199), George Cristall of Dysart was a captive among the Turks' of Algiers, 1650 (PBK., p. 361), and Thomas Cristell was master of the ship James of Dundee in 1567 (RPC., I p. 544). Chrystell 1657, Cristale 1548, Cristle 1474. As forename: Cristall Knowis 1549 (Gaw, 34). See also under Maccristal.
