This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Jubb' (i.e. Job). The old form of Job was Jubb, which see. It was especially popular in Yorkshire, as a reference to Poll Tax of 1379 fully proves. There are twelve Jubbs in the West Riding of Court Directory (1867). This Jubb was sharpened into Chubb.

'William Chubbes (d. 1505), Master of Jesus College, Cambridge (whose name is given in the History of Framlingham as Chubbis, Jubbis, Chubbs, or Juobs). was born at Whitby, and was educated at Pembroke College, Cambridge, where he took his first degree in 1463': Dictionary of National Biography.
