CITHARISTA: From the occupation, player on the cithara. An old name in the parish of Methlick, Aberdeenshire (Jervise, II, p. 25). Nicholas Cithariste had a charter of the forfeited lands of Alexander Cruk or Cruiks in the constabulary of Lithgow from Robert the Brus, and Ade Cythariste or Chichariste had a charter of the lands of Balveny and Tolecandalantum in the thanedom of Abrelemno from the same king (RMS., I, App. 11,901, 950). Thomas cithariste who was provost of Rutherglen in 1328 was probably the individual to whom a pension was paid in the following year (ER., I, p. 87,150). compare also Harpek.
