Claphamson Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This is an extremely curious name, the genitive son being made a suffix to a local surname, not to a personal name as in the case of Williamson, &c. I can only recall one other instance, viz. Couplandson, which occurs in the Ulverston Church registers for two centuries, as, for instance:

1549. Baptised — Agnes Cawplandson: Ulverston Ch.

Claphamson has crossed the Atlantic and has become Claphanson. No doubt Norfolk was the original habitat of the family.

1597. Robert Claphamson, vicar of Hannworth, Norfolk: History of Norfolk.

1637. John Claphamson, rector of Castor, Norfolk: ibid.

1690. Samuel Claphamson, Norwich: ibid.
