This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Clarice.' This derivation may be looked upon as satisfactory. Clarice was an extremely popular girl's name, and Aldridge, Surridge, &c, are formed on similar lines (v. Clarice). Since writing the above, my supposition is proved correct by two entries in the Hundred Rolls, obviously referring to the same individual:

Henry serviens Claricie, Cambridgeshire, 1273. Hundred Rolls.

Henry serviens Clarugge, Cambridgeshire: ibid.

1788. Married — William Claridge and Louisa Careless: St. George, Hanover Square.

1793. — Robert Lees and Ann Clarriage: ibid.

1800. — John In wood and Mary Ann Clarige: ibid.

A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

The name of Claridge is probably a form of the ancient name of Clarice, which was represented in the Dunstable district of Beds, as well as in Cambridgeshire and Oxfordshire, in the 13th century (H. R.).
