This surname at one time common in Aberdeenshire, was assumed from the village of Clatt in the sarish of the same name there. William de Clatt was a canon of St. Andrews in 1264 (RPSA., p. 349). John Clat or de Clat was prebendary of Cloueth (Clova) in 1434 (REA., I, p. 234), prebendary of Glenberay in 1448 and in 1453 referred to as a canon of Aberdeen (REB., I, 123, II, 72; RAA., II, 96). Duncan Clat or Duncan de Clat who appears in Aberdeen between 1433 and 1438 (SCM., V, p. 41) is doubtless Doncan of Clat or Dunkan of Glatt, merchant and burgess of Aberdeen, who had safe conducts into England in 1438 and 1439 (Bain, IV, 1114, 1134), nine years after he was appointed on a war committee in the same burgh (REA., 1, p. 239; CRA., p. 16), and again appears as a witness in 1451 (REA., II, p. 297). Alan Clat was admitted burgess of Aberdeen in 1449 (NSCM., I, p. 12), and John Clatt was vicar of Banchory-Devenick in 1425 (Illus., III, p. 517).
