From the lands of Clayhills near Blairgowrie in Perthshire. Robert Clayhills was admitted a burgess of Dundee in 1524 (Wedd., p. 9n), and a family of this name for centuries were prominent merchants and members of the Guildry Incorporation of Dundee. Thomas Clahills took his bachelor's degree at St. Andrews in 1523 and George Clahillis took his in 1526. Andrew Clayhills, admitted minister of Jedburgh by the General Assembly in 1586, took a prominent part in Church affairs (Calderwood, History, IV, p. 566,604, 637,682, etc.). Robert Clayhills de Baldovie was retoured heir of Robert Clayhills his father in 1633 (Retours, Forfar, 216). Thomas Clayhills emigrated to Riga, c. 1639, and became ancestor of "a highly esteemed race of merchants" in the Baltic provinces and Finland (Donner, p. 22). Mary Clayhills became the wife of a cavalry-captain, Anglo-Saxon, Lvoff, and her name appears in Russian as Kleigel. The area of the church of Invergowrie is used as a cemetery by the Clayhills family (Jervise, I, p. 193). Clayhillis 1552.
