(a) Local, 'of Clare, 'i.e. Clare Castle, in Suffolk. Richard de Clare (d. 1090) held no less than ninety-five lordships in Suffolk, all attached to his chief lordship of Clare in the same county (Dictionary of National Biography x. 389). Lower, quoting Dr. Donaldson (Cambridge Essays), says that to this family we owe the name of an English town, an Irish county, royal dukedom (Clarence), and Cambridge college (Patronymica Britannica). If by the town Clare Castle is referred to, surely this is a mistake. The family took their name from the place, not the place its name from the family.

From the barony of Clere in the Vexin, Normandy. Reginald de C. was father of Matthew I., who m. Lucy de Hangest, and had Matthew II., who m. a sister of William de Longchamp, Bishop of Ely 1189. Roger de Clere founded Little Mareis Priory, Yorkshire, t. Henry II. (Mon. i. 496), and Ralph and Roger Fitz- Ralph de C. were benefactors. In 1165 Roger de C. held two fees from Bigot in Norfolk, and Ralph de Clere from Fitz-Walter and de Clare (Liber Niger). The family was long seated at Ormsby, Norfolk.
Clare is an ancient Oxfordshire name. In feudal times the De Clares were a very powerful family in southern England (L.). In the 13th century the name of De Clare or De Clar' was established in Oxfordshire, Norfolk, Suffolk, Somerset, etc. (H. R.). A liberty in Pyrton parish, Oxfordshire, a market town in West Suffolk, and a Devonshire district bear the name of Clare.
