Of local origin from Cleghorn in Lanarkshire. David Cleghorne witnessed a sasine of 1541 (Home, 252). James Gleghorne was admitted burgess freeman of Glasgow in 1601 (Burgesses), and another Janies Gleghorne is recorded in Coldingham in 1635 (Lauder). The home of the Cleghorns is in the West of Scotland, but a group of families of the name flourished in the parish of Cramond for several generations, and Robert Cleghorn, farmer, at Saughton, near Edinburgh, was a friend of Robert Bums.
