This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Clement' or 'Clemence,' nick. Clem, diminutive Clem-et, now Clemmit. Common to both sexes (compare Constant and Constance). Clement, bishop of Dunblane, elected 1233. William Clement had remission for his part in burning the town of Dunbertane in 1489 (Lennox, II, p. 133). James Clement in parish of Tongland was shot for being a Covenanter, 1685 (Hanna, II, p. 268).
