A personal name from Lat, clemen(t-)s, humane, merciful, through French Clement. S. Clement, according to tradition, was the third bishop of Rome after S. Peter, and died c. 100 A.D. Clement, bishop of Dunblane, elected 1233. William Clement had remission for his part in burning the town of Dunbertane in 1489 (Lennox, II, p. 133). James Clement in parish of Tongland was shot for being a Covenanter, 1685 (Hanna, II, p. 268). Helen Clement is recorded at the Miln of Muckhart in 1742 (Stirling), and six of the name are in the Commissariot Record of Dunblane.
