CLENHILL: Probably from Clennell near Alwinton, Northumberland, which appears in early record as Clenhull (1255) and Clenhill (1346). Thomas de Clenhill, miles, witnessed a charter of the lands of Dolar in the fee of Clackmanan, 1277 (RD., p. 54). He may be the Thomas de Clenhile who received a fee in 1290 (Bain, II, p. 97) and the Thomas de Clenel of Lanarkshire who rendered homage in 1290 (ibid., p. 213).
