From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

The Clephanes appear to have been an offshoot of an ancient family in England which derived their surname from Clapham in Sussex, where they appear to have been setded shortly after the Conquest. The first of the family in Scotland settled in Lauderdale as a vassal of the Morvilles. Alan de Clapham witnessed a charter by Roland of Galloway, c. 1200 (Kelso, 254), and Walter Clapham witnessed a charter by Thomas de Galwethia to the Abbey of Neubotle, c. 1230 (Neubotle, 27). William de Clopham was one of the Scots prisoners taken at Dunbar in 1296, and Marc de Clapham of Fife rendered homage in the same year. His seal bears a fleur-de-lys, and S' Marcide Clopha (Bain, II, p. 177,205, 554). Johanne de Clapam witnessed confirmation of Snowdoun to Dryburgh Abbey, c. 1350 (Dryburgh, p. 232), Alan de Clappam witnessed homage of Duncan, 12th earl of Fife to the abbot of Dunfermline, 1316 (RD., 349), and Alexander of Claphame witnessed a charter by Henry St. Clair, earl of Orkney, at Kirkuaw, 1391 (RMS., I, 824; REO., p. 28). John Clephane, dominus de Kerslogy, 1410 (Milne, p. 41), Ricardus Clapehame, canon of Aberdeen, 1451 (RD., p. 327), Margret Clapane was banished the town of Edinburgh in 1529 for "bying of fische to regrait agane" (MCM., II, p. 85), John Clapen was one of the Scottish undertakers granted an allotment in Ulster, 1610 (Ford, Scotch-Irish in Arnerica, Princeton, 1915, p. 553), and Adam Clephane was killed in a radical riot in Greenock, 1820 (Williamson, Old Greenock, I, p. 241).
