CLINKSKILL, Clinkscale, Clinkscales: Doubtless of local origin from the "terra cottagia in villa de Coldinghame vocata Clinkskaillis," of 1601 (Retours, Berwick, 27), and not from an ancestor, "an energetic tradesman or money changer," as suggested by Weekley (p. 258). Walter Clinkscales is recorded in Wedderburn mylne in 1635 and Isobel Clinkscales in Grewldykes in 1675 (Lauder), and Agnes Clinkskell died in 1785 and was buried in Langton Churchyard. Dr. John G. Clinkscales (d. 1941), professor of mathematics at Wofford College, South Carolina, was of Scottish descent.
