Cloherty Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

Ó Clochartaigh A Connemara name. SIF 35

A Guide to Irish Names (1964) by Edward MacLysaght

This is more often spelt Cloherty nowadays, the prefix O being omitted except in Irish (Ó Clochartaigh).

This is not just an academic observation, because the name belongs to an Irish-speaking part of the country, being numerous throughout Connemara but very rare elsewhere. It is said to have been changed to Stone by quasi-translation (cloch means a stone), but, apart from the few cases of this which may exist in Co. Galway, Stone * is an English name of obvious derivation.
