From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

From the barony of Clugston in the parish of Kirkinner, Wigtownshire. The barony passed by an heiress to the Dunbars of Mochrum. The name is still common in the Stewartry. Sir John de Klogestoun who appears c. 1230—32 (LAC., 73) is probably the John Clugestoun who witnessed a charter by Morgund, son of Abbe, of part of the lands of Carrecros c. 1239 (SHSM., IV, p. 316; Fanmure, I, p. cliv). Adam de Gloggestone of Edinburghshire rendered homage in 1296 (Bain, II, p. 213), and John de Cloggestone was one of the Scots prisoners of war taken in Dunbar Casde in the same year (ibid., 742). John Clugston of that Ilk is in record, 1484, Schir Alexander Clugstone witnessed an obligation by John, earl of Lennox, 1493 (Pollok, I, p. 205), William Clougston, provost of Wigtown, died in 1734, Mary Clugston is recorded at Glasserton, 1785 (Wigtown), and John Clogsfon was writer in Kirkcudbright 1798 (Kirkcudbright). The surname occurs several times in the Register of Cupar Angus Abbey, and may be from a place of the same name in the vicinity. Thomas de Clogstoun leased part of Arerbotheny, 1448 (Cupar-Angus, I, p. 127).
