(in Shetland). From the old land of Clunes in Inverness-shire (Retours). Archibald de Clunace witnessed a grant of lands in Badenoch in 1338 (SCM. IV. p. 126), and William Clunes possessed a house in Leythe (Leith) in 1462 (CDE., 38; Soltre, p. 65). Alexander Clwnes was burgess of Cromarty in 1533 (OPS., II, p. 564), Alexander Cluneis of Culbene was a follower of Ross of Balnagown in 1599 (Celt. Afon., XXIII, p. 60), and William Clunes, burgess of Dornoch, was juror on an inquest held in the tolbooth of Dornoch, 1603 (OPS., II, p. 644), and Alexander Clunes was church beddell at Cawdor, 1685 (RPC., 3. ser. X, p. 550). Individuals of this name settled in Northmavine, Shetland, in the early years of the eighteenth century, and from one of them was descended John Clunies-Ross, who, in 1825, became first chief and proprietor of the Keeling (Cocos) Islands.
