From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

From Clunie in the district of Stormont, Perthshire. William de Clonin witnessed a confirmation charter by Alexander II to the Abbey of Arbroath c. 1214—1218 (RAA., I, 100). The ward of Eugene de Cluny is referred to in 1263 (ER., I, p. 3). William de Cluny of Perthshire rendered homage in 1296, and appears again on an inquest at Perth in 1304 (Bain, II, p. 191,211, 414). Another William de Cluny, chaunteur of Breghyn in the county of Strivelyn, also rendered homage in that year and is mentioned again in 1305 as Sir William de Clony, chaplain to the bishop of Brechin (ibid., p. 208,455). Adam Cluny of Fifeshire also rendered homage in 1296 (ibid., p. 204), and John de Cloni or de Cloney of Fife was one of the Scots prisoners taken at Dunbar Castle in the same year (ibid., p. 176; IV, p. 358). John Clunie or Clunnie was charged with tumult, 1686 (RPC., 3. ser. XII, p. 81), and Rev. John Clunie (b. 1757) was author of the song "I lo'e na a laddie but ane." Twelve of the name are recorded in the Commissariot Record of Dunblane from 1616 onward. Other old forms are: Clenye, Clwny, Clwnye.
