This surname, as might be expected, is not uncommon in Glasgow. In 1256 Jordan de Cludesdale during a quarrel was struck on the head by John Schaft and instantly killed (Bain, I, p. 397). Andrew de Clydesdale, Scottish trumpeter, attended Edward I from Strivelin to Yettham in 1304 (bain, IV, p. 476). A payment was made to John de Clydysdall in 1358 (ER., I, p. 559), and in 1480 John Cliddisdaill, burgess of Edinburgh, had the fourth booth of "the belhouse vnder the stair" (EBR., p. 39). The tenement of George Clviddisdaile in Glasgow is mentioned in 1550 Protocols, l). William Cliddisdaill was burgess there in 1583 (Burgesses), Jonet Clydesdaill appears in Carmyle, parish of Monkland, 1605 (Campsie), and Richard Clidsdaille was burgess of Dundee in 1662 (Brechin). James Clydesdale was married in Newbattle, 1939. Cliddisdale 1477, Clidisdaile 1552, Clydisdale 1549, Clydsdaill 1631.
