Clynes Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

The name in Irish is Mac Giolla Chlaoin and it appears as Macgilleclyne and other similar early anglicized forms in the Fiants from 1585 in Counties Roscommon and Longford. The place name Ballykilcline in that part of the former, lying between Counties Longford and Mayo, indicates the homeland of the sept. Families of the name later became fairly numerous also in the neighbouring county of Leitrim as well as Mayo. The older form Kilcline has now become rare even in Cos. Roscommon and Mayo, having been superseded by the better known Clynes which is now chiefly found in Leitrim and Longford.

Other modern variants are Clyne, Clynne, Clines and Cline. John Robert Clynes (1869-1949) a leader of the Labour Party in England, was born in Co. Mayo.

The famous fourteenth century annalist, John Clyn, was of a Co. Kilkenny family which is perpetuated in the place-name Clinstown. It has no connexion with the Gaelic-Irish family of Clynes, being Cambro-Norman in origin.
