Patrick Coben admitted burgess of Aberdeen, 1486 (NSCM., I, p. 32). Andrew Couban or Coban in Muir toune of Corss, 1633—36 (SCM., III, p. 72,133). The lame is also recorded in Fochabers in 1705 as Coban (MCM., III, p. 432). (2) Cobban in Orkney is a contraction for Kolbeinson, Coban and Cobane, 1687, Cobbie Row's Castle in Weir, Orkney, is a corruption of Kolbein Hruga's Castle (Orkneyinga Saga, 1873 ed., intro., p. LXXV). compare Cobbanson, Colban, and Covington.
