There is a Cocken in county Durham (c. 1138 Coken, which gave rise to a surname) and there is Cocking, a parish in Sussex, from either of which the name may be derived, but the absence of 'de' might seem to rule out a local or territorial origin. Johannes Cokyn is recorded in Perth some time after 1200 (LAC., p. 74). Johannes Cokyn witnessed Richard de Laycestria's two charters to Scone, and another charter to that abbey shows that he was prepositus of Perth in the reign of Alexander II (Scon, p. 56, 57, 61). He is most probably the same with Johannes Sokyn who is witness in another charter by Richard de Leycestria of land in Perth to Inchaffray, 1240 (inchaffray, p. 62), and also c. 1245 witnessed a quitclaim of a sum of money to the same house (ibid., p. 63). Symone Kokyn witnessed a concession in favor of the monastery of Schon c. 1340 (Scon, p. 125). John Cokyne was rector of Alnecrom (Anerum) in 1362 (REG., p. 270), and John Coking is recorded in Leadnill, 1665 (Lanark CR.). John Cockine, fermourer in Netherkidstoun, 1673 (Edin. App.).
