Codyre Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
Codyre is found in the parish of Rahoon near the city of Galway. Mr. P. J. Kennedy informs me that its origin is unknown with certainty, but that it is believed locally that it is an anglicization of cuid Eyre, i.e. the illegitimate children of the Eyre family. Eyre might well have been included in the Anglo—Irish section of Irish-Families, since they were an influential Cromwellian family seated since the seventeenthf century at Eyrecourt and Eyreville, Co. Galway, five of whom were sheriffs of Co. Galway between 1675 and 1809. The first of them, Col. John Eyre, accompanied Ludlow and, having obtained extensive grants in Co. Galway, built the castle and village named Eyrecourt after him. The place was formerly called Cillinithe. From them descended the Co. Cork family of Hedges-Eyre. Elsewhere Eyre has been reported as a synonym of Ayres. It is derived from the Old-French word for heir and was first written le Eir and le Eyer.
