Coffee Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'O'Coffey,' an Irish patronymic. Coffee, of course, is imitative. Biddy in the instance below speaks for her own nationality. It is said that the original form of O'Coffey was O'Cobhthaidh. Dr. Charnock says that Murragh O'Cobhthaidh was bishop of Deny and Raphoe, temp. 1173 (v. Ludus Patronymicus). Both of the modern forms are naturally found at Liverpool, which numbers so many Irish among its population.
1704. Married — Thomas Coffee and Winifred Hillman: St. James, Clerkenwell.
1803. — William Jakins and Bidey (Biddy) Coffee: St. George, Hanover Square.
(Celtic) Victorious [Irish Cobhthach, th = h]
(Irish) Grandson of Cobhthach (victorious).
May be local, or may be of common origin with Coffin, Caffin, &c., the root being Latin calvus, bald."Coffee," says Ferguson, "I take to be the same as Coifi, the name of a converted heathen priest, who, on the reception of Christianity by the people of Northumbria, undertook the demolition of the ancient fanes. It has been asserted that this is not an Anglo-Saxon but a Cymric name, and that it denotes in Welsh a Druid, but Mr. Kemble has shown that it is an adjective formed from cóf, strenuous, and means "the bold or active one."
Lower thinks the names Coffee, Coaffee, Coffey may be local, or of common origin with Coffin, Caffin, &c., the root being Latin calvus, bald. Ferguson says, "Coffee I take to be the same as Coifi, the name of a converted heathen priest who, on the reception of Christianity by the people of Northumbria, undertook the demolition of the ancient fanes. It has been asserted that this is not an Anglo-Saxon but a Cymric name, and that it denotes in Welsh a Druid, but Mr. Kemble has shown that it is an adjective formed from cóf, strenuous, and means the bold or active one." I take it to be the Irish name O'Cobhthaidh or O'Coffey; from cobhthach, victorious, which O'Reilly says is the proper name of a man. Murragh O'Cobhthaidh was Bishop of Derry and Raphoe, and lived A. D. 1173. For the latter see Annals of the Four Masters.
From the French, Coffé; a personal name.
