From Cogan in the diocese of Llandaff, South Wales. Peter Cogan witnessed the gift of an acre of land in Coldingham to the monks of St. Cuthbert, and Robert Cogan witnessed a charter of lands in Raynigton to the Priory of Coldingham, 1275 (Raine, 282,387). Robert Cogan del counte de Berewyk rendered homage, 1296 (Bain, II, p. 203). Robert Cogan (Coggane or Coigin) was schoolmaster at Glencairn, 1684 (RPC., 3. ser. X, p. 309,570), and Samuel Cogan appears in Glengaber, 1731 (Dumfries). Cogan or Coggan is an old west of England name. A John de Cogan of Hunispull, Somerset, in reign of Edward I (HR.), in Cambridgeshire in the thirteenth century (Guppy).

R.); and in the reign of Richard II., William Cogan was sheriff of the county (C.). De Cogan was a name found also in different parts of Devonshire in the time of Edward I. (H. R.), and it has long been an old Tiverton name, Humphry Cogan being a Tiverton mercer in the time of Elizabeth (Harding's "Tiverton").
