Mr. James Henry Coghill in his The Family of Coghill (Cambridge, Mass., 1879) erroneously claims that the Caithness Coghills are a branch of the Coghills of Knaresborough in the West Riding of Yorkshire.
A surname current in Shetland derived from the lands of Cogle in the parish of Watten, Caithness. Alexander Cogle died in 1630 and was succeeded by his son David. Andrew Cogill in Papastour, parish of Waiss, appears in 1628 (Shetland). In Caithness the name is pronounced Go-gl. Later the name was spelled Coghill, which see.
The baronet descends from John Cockhill of Cockhill, gent., who lived at Knaresborough, co. York, temp. Richard II.
