A respelling of the name Cocle, which see. Families of this name are numerous in Caithness today. Mr. James Henry Coghill in his The Family of Coghill (Cambridge, Mass., 1879) erroneously claims that the Caithness Coghills are a branch of the Coghills of Knaresborough in the West Riding of Yorkshire.
