From the ON. personal name Kolbeitin (ODan. Colben). A person of this name gave name to Covington, which see. Colbanus a cleric, 1107—24 (Nat. MSS., I, 11, 12). Colban, mormaer of Buchan, made a gift to the monastery of Deer, c. 1150 (Bk. Deer). Later, as earl of Buchan he witnessed a confirmation charter to the Abbey of Lindores (LAC., 1), and was witness to a charter by William the Lion to the Abbey of Arbroath, 1178—82 (RAA., II, P. 535). In Shetland Kolbeinn appears in place name as Cullin, in Cullinsbroch, Bressay (Jakobsen).
