From the lands of Cowden near Dalkeith, Midlothian. David Colden who appears as notary in St. Andrews diocese, 1459 (REE., I, 193) may be David Coldane, succentor of Dunkeld, 1492 (REA., II, p. 338). Hugh Colden held tenements in Dalkeith, 1504 (Soltre, p. 324), and John Coldene was chancellor of Brechin, 1537 (Methven, p. 42). The Rev. Alexander Colden was one of the most eminent ministers of the Revolution settlement. His name appears to have been pronounced Couden or Cowdon. Cadwallader Colden (1688—1778), distinguished as physician, botanist, mathematician, and lieutenant-governor of New York colony for fifteen years, was born in Dalkeith. See also Cowden.
