Colegrove Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

The name is believed to be English in origin, derived from a place-name. The first known use of the Colegrove name as a surname has been found in the early to mid 16th century, and mostly centered around Oxfordhsire. Due to the prevalence of the Colegrove surname in the Oxfordshire area, some have suggested the name may have originated from a grove along the River Cole nearby, which is a tributary to the River Thames in England. Another explanation as to the origin of the name is from the Middle English cole 'coal' + grave 'pit', 'grave' (Old English col + græf).

Through the centuries the word was also used as various place names. The earliest known reference to Colegrove as a place, one of many, being in a grant of land from one William de Colethorp to his son John in the year 1260 in Gloucestershire, England.

Most Colegrove's and Colgrove's in America descend from one Francis Colegrove, Sr., born about 1663 somewhere in England, who settled in Rhode Island colony in the early or mid 1680's. Francis had at least four sons who left descendants. At least one descendant from Francis has tested positive for Y-DNA markers R1b-U106, and more specifically R-L47.

Many Colegroves still live around the area of Oxfordshire today. Others with that name live elsewhere in England. There was one Mr. John William Manby who in 1884, upon changing his surname to Colegrove, was left the estate of Cann Hall, Essex, from his paternal grandfather, one William Colegrove. Since then some of his descendants moved to Ireland.

Other people with the Colegrove surname live in England, Australia, and New Zealand, among other areas.
