Coylefer is a name met with in records of the early fourteenth century dealing with the southern counties. Though Wexford is not actually one of these, it is in Co.
Wexford we chiefly find the name both in official records of the past and such useful sources as birth registration and voter's lists of the present day. A Co. Wexford testator of 1666 signed himself William Culpher, but as a rule the spelling is consistantly Colfer. There are no less than 75 Colfer householders in Griffth'sValuation for Co. Wexford (c. 1852-3).
