COLKITTO, Collkitto: Alexander Macdonald, Montrose's lieutenant, is never known in Gaelic as Macdonald, but as MacColIa or Coll Ciotach, a designation which accounts for the confusion in which English writers labor in regard to his proper name. In Gaelic ciotach has the meaning 'left-handed, cunning.' Spalding (Troubles) calls him 'Mac Coll Mac Kittish,' Dr. John Hill Burton (Hist, of Scotland, VI, p. 369) thought the name was territorial and writes of him as 'Macdonald of Kolkitto,' and some English writer turned him into 'Colonel Kitto!'.
