Colla Uais, semi-legendary king of Ireland, 327—331, is claimed as the great ancestor of the Macdonalds. Cott, hazel, was one of the three gods of the Tuatha De Danann. From it comes the clan name Maccoll, which see. Coll is also an Old English personal name (10. cent.) and is also an English rendering of Old Swedish personal name Kolir.
