Colleary Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
Mac Giolla Laoire Of north Connacht. SIF 37
This is a case where I cannot accept Woulfe's View— his is a suggestion rather than a statement — that Collery-(he does not mention Colleary) is an anglicized form of Mac Giolla Arraith, which is normally MacAlary, sometimes MacLary or MacClary, and belongs to Co. Derry. Colleary and its variants Collary and Colary are almost exclusively found in north Connacht. There Irish speakers use Mac Giolla Laoire as the Irish form. Callery and Callary are also found in the same part of the country but not exclusively-both occur also in counties Meath and Cavan where MacClearys (now usually called Clarke) are numerous; these are probably offshoots of the Derry sept mentioned above. Woulfe also confuses Callery with Gallery, a Clare name (see More Irish Families, p. 259). There can be no doubt, however, that in Connacht Callery is a synonym of Colleary since we find a MacCallery among the landholders of Co. Sligo in 1633. In the previous century MacCallery occurs four times in the Fiants, always in Co. Sligo. At the present time, apart from metropolitan Dublin, the name is confined to Co.
Sligo and north Mayo.
