User-submitted Reference

Collinge may be linked to other variants of the name such as Collenge, from the French/Walloon (Belgium), there was consistency in the spelling through the centuries. For example there was a pupil registered in Oxford University in the 13th century with the name of Collinge. The incidence of the surname Collinge in East Lancashie, England probably stems from immigrants to that region from Wallonia (now part of Belgium). This was easily discernible from the early forenames, such as Robert, of these early immigrants. A population with name of Collinge exists today in the Liege, Belgium area.

The danger is to automatically assume that as a result of clumsy spelling the Collinge family are somehow related to other people with similar names such as the famous Irish Collins family.
