Collis Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Nicholas,' from nick. Col, diminutive Colly, patronymic Collys, now Collis, Collison of course being the fuller form (v. Colly). Nevertheless as Pattinson becomes Pattison, so Collinson might become Collison (v. Collin). The origin remains the same.
1574. Thomas Collys and Johanna Chapman: Marriage Lic. (London).
1640. Married — Rafe Colleson and Margere Knight: St. Michael, Cornhill.
Though this name, now rare but formerly much more numerous, is well known in Ireland it does not appear in Woulfe. It is of English origin, deriving from the christian name Nicholas. Apart from John Collis who appears in a Co. Tyrone land transaction in 1638,its establishment in Ireland dates from the middle of the seventeenth century, two army officers obtaining land under the Cromwellian Settlement when the family became established in Co. Sligo and in Co. Kerry. The former appears to have died out, though possibly some of the name now to be found in Dublin may be of that descent. The Kerry family increased and prospered. Already by 1661 one Collis had become provost of Tralee and another is listed as a Co. Kerry titulado in the “census” of 1659. From that time until the revolution effected by the Land Acts of 1870 to 1903 the Collises of west Munster frequently occupied prominent positions such as High Sheriff of Kerry, and the number of Collis wills proved in the Prerogative court between 1685 and 1857testifies to their continued prosperity; in 1878they owned 12,000 acres in Counties Kerry, Cork, Limerick and Tipperary. From 1670 others of the name have been merchants in the city of Dublin.
An interesting diary commenting on current events in Ireland and gossip in Dublin from 1685 to 1690, kept by A. M. Colles, can be consulted in the Ormonde Manuscripts (H.M.C. 2nd series VIII).
John Day Collis (1816-1879) a noted educationist in England, was born in Ireland. Abraham Colles (1773-1843) was a Dublin surgeon of international reputation.
Colly’s, Colley’s, or Collie’s (Son). Colly, Colley, or Collie = Coley, q.v.
On record in Ireland since 1638. This name has since that time been continuously associated with Co.
Kerry. SIF 38
