May be 'son of Collie,' a diminutive of Nicholas. An old surname in Aberdeenshire, described in 1732 as "one of the chief surnames here of old" (View, p. 126). The same writer says that the Collisons of Auchlunies or Auchinlaumes have been there for fifteen generations (ibid., p. 265). They had their burial place in one of the two aisles of S. Nicholas Church, Aberdeen. John Colesoun was burgess of Banff in 1487 (RAA., II, 311), John Colyson, David Colyson, and John Colison were admitted burgesses of Aberdeen in 1449 and 1476 (NSCM., I, p. 12, 25). Robert Colisoun was a presbyter in 1489 and John Colisone was presented to the vicarage of Inverness in 1497 (RAA., II, 323,388). Schir John Colison or Colleson, subchantar of Ald Aberdeen in 1577 died in 1584 (SCM., II, p. 45; Analecta Scotica, I, p. 283), Duncane Colisone was 'forspekar' of an assize in Aberdeen, 1505 (Mill, Plays, p. 135), and Gilbert Colinsonne or Collisonne appears as burgess of Aberdeen in 1574 and 1591 (CRA., p. 13; SCM., III, p. 156,157). Thomas Collesoun of Auchlownie was heir of John Collesoune his father in 1623 (Retours, Aberdeen, 182), and Johannes Colliesoune was burgess of Aberdeen in 1674 (Inquis., 5752).
